   Amidst what is displayed, your loved and perhaps. sacred objects, to see the candle, the Virgen de Guadalupe on your window sill, is to feel solidarity. My own Virgen candle only has come out when we are in danger of a power outage but since Minnesota, has stood on my altar in honor of Renee, Liam, Alex and all those who have been taken away and who face such fear and danger all over this land.

   Although, my altar is Celtic and pagan, and I am an ex-Catholic, the Virgen has joined my three wick green Celtic candle and two beeswax candles to hold vigil…Some of the words on the back of the candle, a prayer to the Virgen, move me; words such as love and compassion for those who seek the Virgen’s protection but the word clemency troubles me for there simply is no understanding of clemency toward those who would murder citizens or hurt those who seek asylum… still, I speak words of prayer daily, a conversation with spirit as well as remembered Catholic prayers, as the candles are lit, for our country and for all who believer in Democracy.
