• 20221206_135400so…there's Umwelt.   and  then,   one more thing….the Richardson effect.   i can't go forward till i am  settled enough  within these two "things".    He,   James Bridle,   is the consummate story teller.   Here is how he told me this.  at first paraphrased from pages 101 and 102 of  Ways of Being.

He tells of a meterorologist,  Lewis Fry Richardson  who was also a Quaker,  a pacifist  who during the first World War  was a conscientious objector   who served on the front lines as an ambulance driver.   During the long hours between sorties,  he worked.  with paper and pencil to formulate the movement of airmasses and gradients of atmospheric pressure.

"In a series of books published late in his life,  Richardson sought to discover a mathematical basis for the causes of war and the conditions for peace.   One of his ideas was that the propensity for war between two states might be a function of the length of their shared border.   In order to prove his  hypothesis he needed accurate figures for the length of those borders,  but found that such figures did not exist; no estimate of any one country''s border seemed to match any other.  The deeper he dug into the problem,  the more elusive,  and the more conflicted,  such estimates seemed to be.

he subsequently identified a paradox:  the more accurately you try to measure some things, the more complex they become.  This surprising observation has become known as the Richardson effect.  Imagine taking a kilometre-long ruler and measuring the coast of Britain.  Now repeat the exercise with a ruler half as long,  then half as long again, and so on.   On each measurement,  the reading would get more accurate,   with more and more of the coastline accounted for.  But the result,  as Richardson realized,  was not that the measurement converged on the correct answer but rather,  the more closely it was measured,  the longer it got.  What Richardson had discovered was what the mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot would later term 'fractals':  structures which repeat to infinite complexity.  Instead of resolving into order and clarity,  ever closer examination reveals only more, and more splendid, detail and variation.

The Richardson effect applies to biology, archaeology and biological tools and,  it seems,  to life itself.  As our archaeological and biological tools get better,  as we unravel the web of life,  the result is not an ordered tree,  with measurable branches and clear delineations between forms and types,  but a whirling dance of encounters and interrelationships. The species start to fragment and blur;  the field,  from savannah to tundra and back again,  fills up with players.  The mud's churned up.  The referee can't keep score any more.   It's beautiful,  this teeming world of ancestors and progeny,  this utterly animated free-for-all,  this breaking down of boundries.  This is what the close scrutiny enabled by our technology actually reveals:  not a rigid map,  but a pattern of interference,  all the way down to the quantum dance of the energy field behind everything. "                                                                                                                                                      ~*~

and…just one more thing,  one more story….  paraphrased.   to give more picture of how he writes.

on 28 March 1838  Charles Darwin visited  London Zoo  to see an orang-utan named Jenny.   Jenny was one of the first such apes that people in Britain had seen.   he was allowed to enter her enclosure.   He wrote to his sister about her.  This was 20 years before he would publish On the Origin of Species.  He returned to the Zoo in subsequent months bringing Jenny small gifts each time.    a mouth organ,  some peppermint and a sprig of verbena.

    words in the morning.

IT's  EVENING NOW.    Monday evening.     Last eve i tried and tried  to get both pics and words into this post and as it seems to go for some reason,  Typepad is too touchy for that on Sunday night.   Had to give up.   And all day i thought about the lesson this gave.   There is something for me to writing at the end of each day.   Coming back to this tonight,  ….  there is a strong tendency to just let it go.      so i think about that.   how MUCH would be  just let go if i gave up posting every day.  How do i feel about that.

the dress….Emrie's Michigan Great Gramma sent it.  a Christmas dress and she wants to wear it every day till Christmas.

behind her is Alyssia positioning  the  "sled"  at the back of her SUV where the feed store guys stuffed the two bales of grass hay. These are 3 string bales.   When Jenny ordinarily brings them,  both she and her man lift each bale and carry it down the  slope to the feed    shed.   it occured to me that i should say something about the sled.   It's something that Jenny found and bought last year or so?   Jenny is a How Are We Going To Get This Done person.  They are expensive but they WORK.   Allowing things to happen that otherwise could not.  It's from Yard Glider.com.   She got a large one,  maybe 4ft X 10ft  and this small one for me.  3 X 4.   They don't look like much.   but how they work is amazing.   the terraine here is steep.  Anything with wheels is impossible to control going down hill,  impossible to push going uphill.   There are also a lot of rocks,  large ones.  Those pine cones.   Sticks.   These  actually GLIDE along.   with the small one i can comfortably haul 4 10 gallon buckets of  composted manure and scrap feed  to B Garden.   I can pile it high with the mucked out bedding straw.   HEAVY things.   None of this could happen otherwise.   The large one is to allow the ongoing forever work of bringing downed branches and  cut tree trunks out of the forest to the edge of the road to be chipped someday.   a lot of Us here    do things OutSide.   Thought i could offer this.

the window…all that is on the INSIDE!!!!!…..i'd baked potatoes and a squash earlier.   Then heated the kettle to wash dishes.  it had rained almost constantly,  a night and the day…. and i realized how little i understand about    AIR.    How is it possible that the AIR inside this tin house can be SO FULL of moisture???????  and i don't drown???????

and then….before going on with more reading of  Ways of BEing,  i realize i want to more fully understand the thing of

    Umwelt

google.  one's surroundings or environment,   the outer world,     as perceived by organisms within it.

the key….as perceived.       as perceived.   This,   is huge.     i love it.

spent a lot of time with this thought today.

these   lables.    There is something about them that is so appealing.    ??????    i got a box of them.    for no reason.   something about a Mobile.   also for Emrie to draw on.    then…make a mobile of hers.    They make me feel good.

a couple things about all that yesterday.   first….i would so much MISS the connection with responses….the WE that happens,  the US.   that we all go along Together

and then,  there's a so strong sense that i am just Missing Something….not seeing,   something in plain sight…?????

i went around,  as i do,  every day,  reading all our blogs and felt as i always do…a part of people's lives…that receiving the stories of  Our days,   i am a    Part of that.    This is     GOOD.   am grateful.   very.

it has been raining for 24 hours.   Steady downpour.   except miraculously,  as often happens,  a let up around 11 am and then again around 4 pm.    the miracle being that this is close enough to FEED times.   Today…only a let up…still a soft rain falling but letting up enough to do what needed to be done.   it was Feed delivery day.  We go through 4 bales a month of grass hay.  Ordinarily Jenny is responsible for bringing,  but due to circumstance now,   can't.   What to do?   Alyssia brought 2 bales in the back of her SUV.   The feed store guys are great at tricky loading.   They stood them upright,  squashed them in.   I stood ready at the feed shed between Jack Flash and Nogal….door shoveled and freed up  ready to OPEN     the little sled in position to pull the bale down the hill from her vehicle so she could flip it over into the shed.    YES and it was done.   She drove up with the other bale and Emrie and i walked up with the sled.    On to the Curry house where half of the feed is stored and fed from.  Repeat with the sled for Alyssia while Emrie and i measured out and fed the evening pellets.  We had to empty the Bowls of rainwater.  We were like clock work.   Not a lot of conversation,  just a lot of Doing,   the 3 of us…one 77,  one 33 and one 5.   a team.

i would have imagined that the last summer season of so many 100+  days might have had an affect on the forest.    In just these couple weeks of Rain Season,   Lichen and Moss  seem somehow…energized?    This is an Oak that is just along the road Up  near the entry to the Doe Forest.   It's alive and all leafed in upper branches.   But even more green than it appears here.   In the morning Sun when i go there to feed Jack Flash and Nogal,   it is a VIBRANT  green,   the two communities intermingled.   I'll try for a close up in next few days.  The next 2 are forcast  Rain.

    20221202_075349

i looked.   the old Blogspot pages are Still There!…as in still floating ,   in tact.   From beginning,  April 2010.  So that makes the blogging going on 13 years!        huh.

in the beginning it was intermittant but i was all so crazy happy with Spirit Cloth…Everything was NEW     Everything i

    made

    was New.   Never before.

somewhere along the line i  decided to post everyday,   to underline for my Self,  really,  that Every Day there is something to celebrate.   and this continues to be true.   And over time,  i kept posting every day because i felt that if it was intermittant,  it could easily fall away.   and that is possible.    Lately with the repetition of the making being only the Spirals,   how this will continue at least until all of them are finished,  which means   for both    Jenny's and Alyssia's,   50 of them and then their becoming 2 Blankets….   that's a lot of repeating.   But it's what my Making IS now and needs to be.    and too    i find that i have fallen into a kind of laziness with words…minimizing  how i Tell of things that are extremely important to me.   ???   Why?.   maybe just that fact that over these years i have become accustomed to the tap it out on the phone thing?   no,  that's too easy…maybe because i have become more and more drawn in by things that allude simple explanation and yet not willing to take the time to truly TELL?   …make the effort?…..TRY to Tell?     Because it might not make sense to anyone but me?   ???

the above…what i wrote as Last Thought.     it directly correlates with something in  Ways of Being.   "the Richardson effect"…   So much of that book,  of what James Bridle presents as story into story out of story into story  is

what i have been thinking about….but he goes so  DEEP  and with so much story of How Things Came To Be,   How Things continue to Come to Be More,   all the knowing that i don't have and can never hope to.    Maybe if i can somehow find a path that way?

I have completed the 77th year.

what that means to me is actually turning out to be impossible to say.  But it's all the above and then more.   But it's

    done.

time ahead now,   different.   I can travel lighter,  go deeper.   Stay longer.   Not stay at all.

the words in that sentence  above….came spontaneously….16 words….adding up to 7.   and i smile.   Of course they would.

had been too long since i'd had the Earth Cloth spread  out….All them,   there.   I'll leave it this way for a while again…so i don't forget    that….all is always well among them.  and the one that has been awkward….just a part of Them.  so….maybe it's not the Spiral that is awkward…..maybe it's me.  ?

Rain days again.   I get ready.   Boots on.   Warm jacket i call my snow suit jacket.  over that,   the Rain Jacket.  Wool hat.   all by the hourly weather app.   it said noon today…only the image of 3 rains instead of 4,  which means light rain….which means when i can go give Feed.   and somehow almost always,  right around morning feed and evening feed there is a let up.  enough for them to eat.    it was 11 am today.  then again at 4:30.   gratitude.   tomorrow,  Sun.   reprieve for All.    Stuff is very OK.

for the sake of.     these words.      their meaning.     i don't know.    yet.

    So i changed.   8 and 9

this one.  this Spiral is trying to tell me something.   second guessing.    third guessing.   this hasn't happened before,  but  i am stuck in it….for the sake of………..?……………..

again,  the color is all off most likely because it's taken with the table lamp because Night  has come   so soon.   The hard time of year for me,   when dark comes so so soon

i'll pull over the large  Earth cloth of all the others in the morning.   Put   it   among them and maybe be able to know more,  seeing it WITH the others?

rain tonight.  Puppy has come in.  Purring over an hour as i talked to Alyssia on phone,  purring and purring and purring.  it's cold out there.   Alyssia brought bedding straw.  just in time.

  • 20221129_211531

but maybe it is a good thing.   it underlines     what it is to feel good about a day at the end of them?     so i will let this remain the question till tomorrow when there will be a new one.     and this Spiral…eee….   when i realized how late it had gotten,  i

    hurried

trying to choose,  instead of letting the cloths choose   and here we have it.   9 too short and all.    9 and 10 are only pinned.  For looking.   and again,   eee.   Not.   but then again,  maybe yes.   to act as the example of how Not to be…making decisions that are not mine to make,  hurrying,   not honoring.     Ok.  Good enough.   Begin again tomorrow.

*i clicked publish.   went to see how it came through on the phone….it's very strange…colors are so Off.   so it underlines things even more.   Even more.     Don't repeat if you can help it, grace.   ok.

3 days away…but it didn't take much.    Just deciding on the first strip and it all returned.   They WANT to happen.  Those are Deb Lacativa's  Moons at the top.   And the megamendung which i could never use because it is so "Jude".   For Alyssia,  i can let these  go.  How much i love this.   Waiting is the right thing to do.

and about drawing…i thought all day,  remembering the drawing classes with Kay Gould Caskey,    in Ann Arbor, Michigan,  the 80's,    (she reads here)    i wish we could All have that….about Seeing, really,  about FeltSense.    and Kay is Brilliant and a Joy as a human being,

but alas     and then i remembered….     Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain    Betty Edwards.   Probably most of you know of this already,   but if not…..it will take you some of the way back to those classes.    my old worn copy is at Alyssia's i think?   Will see if  she can find it.

the LeftOvers came today and it is Bliss.     LeftOvers from Saturday and also from Alyssia's friend Chelle's in San Diego.  I could not DREAM more.  Food is Love.

Jude's post at Feel Free.   a photograph of a basket she'd forgotten on the fence,  nested in the Summer's growth.   I was filled with such a longing to draw it.   was transported back to me and my loved friend Dora spending days drawing dried,  paper thin iris…the joy of that and i wanted to draw these stems and vines and spent leaves in this photograph….

when i fed Goats this morning…at the gate,  a  mushroom that just yesterday had been an oval cone shape but in the passing of just hours transformed  to a  withering almost flower appearance…it all was so delicate…this transition so i thought…Draw this.

and how such devotion is required.   slow.  touch of the point of the pencil,  one into the next,  slow and breathe…touch again

have been asked a couple times…What will you do if you use up all the cloth?

    Draw.

so it was Thanksgiving today.  At Alyssia's.   There were 10 of us.  All ages.  All,  all,  each one of us,  totally different one to another  and  what i think of as i am back on the Hill in the dark…. how we are each of us,  different,  but how amazingly

    compatible

we are.  Something truly to be thankful for.
