 a comment from ShiShi about the first cloth caused me to wonder about the difference between the basket loom weaving and the woven on a foundation…in this case, the "dark weaving" made last week with the Weaving Assistant which has harem cloth backing. 

What if i used the same fabric but wove a little one on the basket loom, would it be different?

Would it have that soft, fluid feeling?  how else might it be different? 

so i did it and there on the little table too was a piece of scrap from the scrap bag.  What if it was a butterfly wing????  so that got basted on and i should have waited until i did some mosaic weave, but i was impatient, …………….and yes!, there is a completely different quality to it that i will think about for the rest of the day.  

AND the hot water tank/pipes unfroze !!!!!    Flow.

    i found that difference too, grace. it has a softness and puffiness that the flat weave doesn’t have. i think weaving on the ‘loom’ makes a tighter weave and that’s what makes the difference. we had 1″ of snow this morning and it’s all gone now and everything here has also thawed out. it was just enough snow for me to enjoy but not cause any problems.

    well…there’s some mysterious other thing that seems to come into
    play…don’t know what it is yet…trying to just leave it alone
    and wait…
    snow. well, i am glad you enjoyed yours. i just absolutely DO NOT
    like snow. i accept snow as important and necessary, but i don’t
    like it at all. that’s dumb, i know, but

    about the “loom weaving”– i like this a lot and brings back memories from when i used to weave in a floor loom that i gave to a dear friend some years ago and of course for the jacket pieces that i need, this method goes a little faster and can make pieces longer if needed, etc.

    it’s not dumb that you don’t like snow. i just get a kick out of watching the kids play in the snow especially when it is a new phenomenon to them. and all the moms and dads out taking pictures. it is a rarity here so no time to get sick of it.

    this would not be the case in some parts of the planet, but here, snow is welcomed because it provides necessary water to the aquifers…mostly in the form of run off from higher elevations. my co-op water provider here in
    Polvadera provides water from wells that are dependant
    on snow over there across the freeway, past the mesa.
    otherwise, snow feeds the Rio Grande which feeds the
    acequias…BAD SPELLING…but the irrigation system that
    keeps farmers farming in this state, keeps livestock
    “live”. long time residents celebrate snowfall. it’s
    only we who are the “invaders” that complain.

    Snow also feeds the soil, a kind of fertilizer. I like it when it snows here before we get a cold snap because it also provides insulation for plants.

    So glad your pipes unfroze without incident. Yes, very different results with the weaving. It’s easy to see how the results would lead to different applications.

    well back to the cloth.. to my eye there doesn’t seem to be a difference… obviously i haven’t done any off loom weaving for class yet… but if the appearance isn’t much difference maybe they can go in the same larger cloth??

    they could, but because of the individual nature of how they
    feel, i probably wouldn’t do that. the larger foundation weave
    is uhhh, kinda more “formal”. and it would stand alone anyway.
    the small one, woven on the basket loom, is soft…even if it
    were larger, i think it still would be soft like this one…need
    to find out. i can easily imagine the loom woven one combining
    with others to create a large cloth…a covering.
    all an experiment still. i think i am going to try a larger
    loomed one later today with muslin warp. will use a picture frame.

    Nance, rain can in parts that don’t have snow but in the north the snow is necessary for the water levels, but also it is a natural bug killer, and we would be over run with certain bugs that could become a nuisance and crop detriment. I believe (but I did flunk science) that where there is no snow, different bugs etc. reside where it is not needed. ramble…ramble…huh???Anyway winters with little snow make low great lake levels in summer which provide lots of water and transportation thru the waterways, thus necessary.
