these hollyhocks are the granddaughters to the Enth Degree
of seeds i stole from Georgia O’keefe’s garden at Ghost
Ranch 16 years ago. they are everywhere now.
no….no dye of these…but i am scouting around town
for the “black” ones…an oh so so deep purple as to
read black. those, i would like to try dyeing with

Oh! These are a glorious thing to see on my first morning off! & love that they’re from Georgia’s garden. I’m waiting for my Monet poppies to bloom, (also stolen).

When the season is over, please save a few seeds for me. I’ll see if I can get those warrior flags to fly in Georgia.

oh a friend stole a tomato from the vatican garden once so he could save the seeds. now they are a legendary must-have for many food gardeners in these parts. best paste/sauce plum tomatoes ever.

i don’t know about thrilled…she was a hard woman to
impress. she is here, over this computer, watching me
every day with that LOOK. but she wouldn’t hold it
    against me.

YES! stolen seeds. i love this thread~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    yes.
i remember once being told by a native person, first
    person
that the best way to acquire a thing of power would
    be to
find it…as in just find it from the earth…unexpected
the second would be to be gifted
the third would be to steal it

my friend Margaret used to go around the city stealing flowers and she carried pruners in her bag so she could take clippings home. she always said that no one would stop an old lady. guess i should start taking up the tradition since she is gone.

My Grandma Grace had hollyhocks all over
her yard up in Mora, NM! All sorts of colors.
Your flowers so remind me of our
    summers up there.
    lovely, Grace! Thank you ………..

Grace/ Acey, I’ve been off the computer for over a week, cleaning my father in laws house (moving out) but any way…had to comment “stolen from the vatican”? Funny but still. . . .Not a Catholic I assume. Ha!maybe God was okay with the purpose she had. ha!

Don’t know how I missed this whole conversation! I haved loved the hollyhock from way back when. My neighbors have had them years past, maybe I better look again! I don’t remember them being this vibrant though. If there are any seeds left…
Thanks for this brilliant red flower and blooming conversation!

well…to me, Ghost Ranch might be on par with the
Vatican. also, i think seeds are meant to travel.
birds know that and assume the responsibility, as does
    Wind.

i first knew hollyhocks in the alley behind our
four family flat in Detroit. there was a big square
cement trash thing and surrounding it, hollyhocks.
i climb up and sit on it, feeling like a queen or
    something.
also, i knew them from the original Raggedy Ann and Andy
books that sort of creeped me out.
again…i was about four years old. as things go along,
a lot of things imprinted my awareness during that time…
