this is the first time that there has been enough of an issue of ,  uhhh,  lumpiness,  for me to feel like i am going to have to actually DO something about it.  since this cloth is going to be roaming around the house, around Me, and not on a wall once it's done,  i might just let it go.  but the pooching is definately there with the dense stitching of the Feather Grass.  i was aware all along, but then suddenly it was beyond being able to be pressed flatish with my fingers.  what to do, i don't know.

and the grasses here are only about half done.   that will make it harder.  i put the two pieces of what might be rock cloth there, thinking i could pull the ripples "under them" when they go on?, maybe.

and i went outside to look at the Feather Grasses and realized that how i have been depicting them is how they are in the spring, when they are "new" and more upright.  now, in winter, they are all "out", i guess, feathery.  hmmmmm.

and this morning when i awoke, i saw something on the kitchen floor…a tiny perfect ….. dragon!  and squated down to see it more closely, picking it up, realized it was a dried out piece of Arugula from my salad.  but still, a tiny perfect dragon.

LOVE your grasses. And the arugula dragon is quite a bit of magic… must have been the night time faeries having a go at sculpture. They were inspired by your cloth, you know.

your dragon is charming–what wonderful seeing! great texture in the grasses–I like it, but if that’s not your preference, deb’s idea might do the trick

Maybe you could scrunch up the excess fabric so it makes a little folded ridge and then overcast it so it stays put…um, I can see it in my mind but am not sure the words describe what I mean.

I don’t see enough lumps to create an issue 🙂 Part of the charm!?

I’m not sure if you would feel it from the backside (which usually is the part of a cloth that’s around you) so I wouldn’t bother. Maybe stitch it down a bit, but most probably I just would let it go and see how it develops further on. It might change with wearing, washing and stitching.
I love the whole cloth and just yesterday I showed the picture of your room to DH and we looked at it with great admiration. I could feel right at home there.
And the arugula dragon is so cool.

Not a glitch in my humble opinion; lumpiness adds life to a cloth…

I was think along the same lines as Suzanna… could you not have the ‘ridge’ running in the same direction as the grass.. then over stitch the ‘ridge’… giving you a slight 3d grass…
    does this make sense..?

grace, its hard for me to really see what is happening. however…steaming can be a good thing and it can help more of the same to show up. arlee is the queen of managing ripples. she just uses them …somehow adapts them into the design. i think you should ask her!

well…i do love it, right now. but if it gets to be
way more with the rest of the grass….

yes…jude taught us that, but it wouldn’t work in this place. it might correct the pooch, but would not have anything to do with what’s going on in that room….and that’s more important to me

first thought- it’s just touchable & wrapped around or over a body- who’s to tell whose bumps and lumps are whose?
2nd- all the times janie would call me in a panic to come look at her bumps & i’d say “just quilt it out” & she would quilt the hell out of her cloths & it always worked.
3rd- would close together invisible baste do the trick? that’s something you could try after the finishing & washing, if it still wasn’t what you wanted it to be.
4th- i’ve been using arlee’s tricks & slicing & overlapping & stitching over w/success, but these are small pieces w/o beautiful grasses to work around…..never mind, go back to my 1st thought.

Hi Grace, I love the way your cloth is becoming more alive & sculptural with gathering it’s own thoughts and tensions… maybe one of the grasses is wanting to move forwards by binding that wrinkle as a few others have suggested… the good thing is stitching is not indelible if it doesn’t feel right you can just pull it back out!
I thought of you when Deanna linked to this work in the International Quilt Show in Tokyo “Born Free” by Miyoko Murata- Prayers by Needles exhibit ( and love the category too)
