today i just wanted to see what those birds might look like, flying in an arc over Jude's lizard.  i snipped up the first black piece of cloth i saw…which won't be it, because it frays too much…but just to look.

and then, i thought to just try something butterfly ish.  it had come to me upon waking this morning that the butterflies would be rising , in like a cloud on the right,  up from that "room" with the lightning, the room of storms where the toads have put their eggs.   hanging over the back of the chair was the piece of cheesecloth that i'd used to make paneer the other day.  washed and then hung over the chair to dry.  ok.   and i should know better by now, but i still am always wanting to use guaze.  but…just to look at,   while the urge was strong.

and looking at these,  i found this drawing i'd come across some days ago, in the most recent purge of stuff.  i have very few left, but had kept this.  it's so typical of my "style".  i drew it in 1996.  if i were to try to draw something similar now, it would look much the same i think.   it, like everything i make has a "cartoonish" quality.   if i literally COPY someone elses drawings, i can render then correctly.  but when it just rises up out of my mind…it always looks like this.   i cannot make it different.  and  the addition of these black birds today kinds of emphasizes that quality in this cloth.  i am wondering if i made the birds smaller and made more birds…what would that do?

i love the birds.. must be ravens or crows. don’t change the size. they are perfect there. like a crow rainbow.
your drawing is wonderful. i am fascinated by it. i love that face. i think your dolls must have had that face.
    you always amaze me.

the birds are good. i see a ring forming. do you? your drawing reminds me of a joni mitchel album cover. very 60’s collage. my drawings always seem cartoonish to me as well.

    it’s all the same…dolls, drawings, cloth….
where does it COME from, i am wondering. it just always
WAS. even when i was a kid. same quality.
yes…to the black birds some how….and when i look
at it from far away, like from the living room, that
exaggerated quality lessens some, but them being black,
they really still stand out…but then yes. the crows
that i love so and the raven..tho they fly alone, that
raven in the middle is that, i guess,
but the crows that ride the thermals just constantly
    remind me how to live

yes, a ring forming, and it will become more so with
the stones down by the grasses in a similar arc that
    the birds are.

Grasses and bird-ring. I wonder what it would be like to make my spirals this big? I’ve been thinking about it, your grass bird-ring brings me closer to doing it.

The crows, I love the crows whirring in that arc. Crows here are quite big birds and I used to watch out for them at lambing time because they attacked the tiny ones, took their eyes. So I find them a little scary but totally fascinating. I love your drawing, the eye looking so curiously through the leaves, the lips apart in anticipation. Cartoon doesn’t seem right unless you mean like Leonardo’s “cartoons”?

Grace- Well, I can safely say that I’ve never thought cartoon when looking at your work. I love this drawing you’ve shared. Each being is so so focused. I love the birds as they are (color & size). I did notice they seem to be in 2 sets of three, flying towards the center, coming together in an unseen point, somewhere leading they eye off to the space above them. I see the circle Jude mentioned and I was wondering, what if they were all facing the same way…leaning into the circle. That was just my thought.
I also had this thought that when I come here…there is always a surprise, a treat…
it may be the small stitches of well-loved grasses that I have to use the zoom feature to fully appreciate or maybe an old treasure that you’ve dug up to share with us or maybe (like today) I gasp when the first picture comes up, just flooring me. Thanks Grace for sharing yourself with us. I’d say your style suits you well…very well.

i actually wished for them to be bigger. they really add to the connecting the story of your cloth. and to continue with connections- janie’s totem was the raven or crow.

How interesting it is that a person so centered in her vision, still thinks it might be cartoon, or that the crows are the wrong size, but such speculation is part of creation, and cannot be avoided, perhaps ought to be embraced. Sharing the vision and the doubts with us is generous. I’m looking forward to the next installment.

the blackbirds are where they should be, also because of the grasses on either side; I do like their free forms. But this is just my take on your work.
very interesting, your question about style…I too think about this from time to time, usually when someone has asked me why I paint/make what I paint/make (and they want me to teach them) I answer: I start with one of my ‘themes’ or a sketch and this evolves, at times I have an image in my mind and try to translate this onto the canvas and I ask myself ‘what if I tried this ?’and I am ALWAYS limited by my (lack of) talent, put another way I can only do, what only I can do.
Even if I tried to copy your cloth I could never get further than the superficial image, because I could never stitch in exactly the same order and would not have your eye and hand for searching and finding solutions and so on.
Again, I really like this piece of yours and your sharing of it’s growth.

The birds make it sing…and yes, I see a ring forming too! I love the way you write about your process Grace. Oh and I always love to see your drawings…so multi-layered like your stitched stories.

I like the movement – with the addition of the arc of ravens. The ring they almost make gives a flow around. There’s a spin to it. I like very much the way the birds are with the ends of the grasses to make that arc over the whole cloth – holding it all together. It is so exciting that you are making this.

I like the birds and the arc of movement they create – and their free forms. What do you mean by ‘cartoon’? Like a caricature of the subject – or? To me, the face in your drawing looks old and wise, strong and certain. Nice to see how your style is there in both the drawing and the cloth.

i love the birds too and the ring that’s forming. the two birds at the top especially, they are so joyful. i’ve wondered about style too, it seems to emerge and be so unexpectedly consistent with some people, like you! who knows where it comes from, but what a blessing it is.

our crows are large too. not as large as ravens. but
ravens are solitary. crows are social.
and thank you for telling me about lamb eyes…it’s
not a pretty thing. but something to know. i wonder
if they do that here? i’ll have to ask around.
and you know what…i remembered this morning why i kept
that drawing. if you click and enlarge it
you can easily see that the shapes over the eye are a
Praying Mantis! i’d forgotten. am glad i kept it.
cartoon is the best word i can think of. stylized. or ???
    but…there is a quality that everything has….

the style suiting…well….it’s just what it is.
with the addition of the rocks, stones today, there is
a rocking motion…it’s subtle yet and i wonder if i
add the additional stones i think i will, will that
continue? or will they weight it down? won’t know till
    morning now…..i am excited.

yes. it’s all just speculation, just noticing, just
thoughts. they ARE my thoughts. i can’t help it when
they arise. they just are. and i am so prone to
    just verbalizing whatever drifts through

yes. to all that you said. what appears from the hand
appears from the hand. for sure with cloth i know this
to be undeniably so. something similar maybe…but not
IT. i tried and tried to make something even close to
that little weaving that Jude made on my altar. it is
“just” thin strips, woven, barely stitched. but even
if i had her exact cloths for the strips…i can’t. i
really really can’t. i CAN make something that is
somewhat similar but the same energy is Not there. it’s interesting.
