They look like they’ve been there for a long time, like they too belong to the land.
    A beautiful site 🙂
BTW – Seen anymore green lights lately? I’m still thinking about them.

They do all just look as if they positively belong there. That’s a lot personalities all in one place – because it does look as though a goat would know exactly who he/she is. Arctica jumping right up there. I love the names I have heard so far. Arctica, Ginger, Gideon…

Just learned that Wendell Berry, farmer, essayist, novelist, conservationist, and poet, received the highest honor for intellectual achievement in the humanities from the National Endowment of the Humanities on Monday. He gave a lecture Monday evening and as I look at the goats, Berry’s words so beautifully speak to this. Quoting just a bit from his lecture:
“For humans to have a responsible relationship to the world,” says Berry, “they must imagine their places in it. To have a place, to live and belong in a place, to live from a place without destroying it, we must imagine it. By imagination we see it illuminated by its own unique character and by our love for it. By imagination we recognize with sympathy the fellow members, human and nonhuman, with whom we share our place. By that local experience we see the need to grant a sort of preemptive sympathy to all the fellow members, the neighbors, with whom we share the world. As imagination enables sympathy, sympathy enables affection. And it is in affection that we find the possibility of a neighborly, kind, and conserving economy.”
Grasses, seeds, birds, lizards, goats, humans – it’s all our place, together.

well…today Continuing. they attended every step of
    the construction….
i am luring the young one, Buck Wheat, with peanuts. He
is a tease. but falling to my peanut ploy.
Gideon breathes into my hair and mutters buckly things
and TenZen, as namesake of the Dalai Lama, is full of Calm Abiding.
it was utter pleasure working on their hut today with
them watching and FEEELing it all. Bless~ed them.

Hey Grace, well done! The goats just seem to belong there, don’t they? As if your yard had just been waiting for them to take their place. And the buck hut, ha! Here they say, men and their sheds – I guess this is their shed where they can share stories over a cold beer.

Susan…they DO. know who they Are.
Arctica, Ginger, Gideon, TenZen, Buck wheat, Whimsy (called
Barbara), Ona, Onday, little Grace, Caroline, SnowBunny,
and Lucky Star.* and the two new ones who spent the day
with the herd and now the night.
it was just mindblowing to watch them in their transition
from a smallish “indoor” pen to the outside with all the
Tia’s (aunties..spanish). how they were afraid for maybe
10 minutes but then immediately began to understand their
surrounding, identifying safe places and then making
forays out from them. by the end of this evening, they
had taken their Place amoung the others. they are not
babies any more. They are part of the herd.
it was quite Beauty Full. it gives me tears of love.
*their herd name is Crazy Wisdom.

‘tried” to do many things with that space out there and
none “took”. and here they Are. just being themselves
    the way goats do.
i like that a lot…men and their sheds.
    women and their sheds.
my guess is that goats might really enjoy a cold beer.

i know there is some brilliant quote out there about ordinariness–but i don’t know that quote.
i just know that most of life is ordinary.
    & i love the word.
    ordinary.
    common.
    is there anything better?
to notice how filled with meaning is every ordinary moment.
    how beautiful.
    how painful.
    how joyful.
how ordinary all of this is.

My best friend has a goat ranch. He has a very boro-ish saying, “Good enough for goats.” Because he has so much to do, he fulfills a task just until the purpose is met and moves on. This can mean that a gate is an old bed frame connected with a chain, dog igloos are shade shelters, a bucket holds the emergency birthing kit and serves as a stool. The goats do this too; A downed tree is a goat playground, and I am a tool which goat front legs are positioned so the goat can nibble higher leaves.
