in keeping with

in keeping with this 3 hundred and sixty five day effort,  which is in keeping with that concept of Partnering with the Unforseen, which is in keeping with achieving some sense of Clarity about Living, which is inkeeping with a great sense of Earnestness….in figuring out what Works (and what? does That mean, what works?)  i'm going to flip things for a while.  Post in the morning, first thing.    Often that might mean i have nothing to say yet, nothing to…show.  But, i'm thinking, i can add anything as the day goes if there is Indeed something to add.

and admiring my new shower curtain again this morning, i was startled.  HOW AMAZING it is that we totally stop seeing something because we have seen it so many times.

there on the wall behind the toilet is a framed print of Meinrad Craighead!!!  all this talk the other day and i never once remembered…  But, here it is.  it's one of the ones i ordered for that old bookstore i've mentioned….23 years ago.  Maybe i'll move it.

making progress with chair when Old Cowboy phones, wondering if i'd forgotten his stuff he needed.  which were, printer paper that he makes paper envelopes with for his pirated dvds, Halls throat lozenges and salted peanuts in the shell.  He says he knows i don't have time for him but when did i think i might get to the store.  ok.  so i go to walmart where this stuff is and suddenly i am in the paint department.  i am looking for Ivory.  the paint guy tries to ignore me but sees my earnestness afterwhile and becomes helpful.  there are no paint chips called ivory.  he looks through his book.  no.  he gets an idea…in the spray paint there is YES! a can of Ivory!  and it appears to be the same as the Country White that looked closest to me to Ivory.  O.K.

it's

white.  or

appears white.

i have a gallon of it.  and i already knew i am absolutely NO GOOD at picking paint colors.  there's really no hope of doing better, especially at walmart and it's the only place with paint in town.  So, now what i wonder.

YIKES, SNAKE! I’m sorry to say this but when I come, you will have to lead me to the bathroom cause I will have my eyes closed. Still have this immense fear of the creatures both on paper and for real…

Hi Grace, let’s see whether it’s possible to post again….
I really enjoy the tour around your home.
The print is beautiful – and I am not very fond of snakes either…
    Have a great evening,

Grace, maybe you could move it since you don’t really see it there any more after all these years? T the bedroom where marti will be safe from it!
This next is from a study on creativity. Related to a post awhile back…. On women in art… There was a great discussion and I want to add this to it.
Saying “no” has more creative power than ideas, insights and talent combined. No guards time, the thread from which we weave our creations. The math of time is simple: you have less than you think and need more than you know. We are not taught to say “no.” We are taught not to say “no.” “No” is rude. “No” is a rebuff, a rebuttal, a minor act of verbal violence. “No” is for drugs and strangers with candy.
Creators do not ask how much time something takes but how much creation it costs. This interview, this letter, this trip to the movies, this dinner with friends, this party, this last day of summer. How much less will I create unless I say “no?” A sketch? A stanza? A paragraph? An experiment? Twenty lines of code? The answer is always the same: “yes” makes less. We do not have enough time as it is. There are groceries to buy, gas tanks to fill, families to love and day jobs to do.

This wasn’t a study on women per SE but I think it has meaning for us ..at least women of my generation… I will be 65 on sat…. We were taught to be agreeable and put our own needs aside… More than men. But now i am of an age requires me to really think about what I take on. I only have so much time left and what do I want to do with it?

love the Meinrad Craighead print, isn’t it funny how if you have the same view of a thing for long enough even if it’s the most astounding view/painting/sculpture/whatever in the world it just becomes part of your space… but making that little shift in the space to give it more room to see it with fresh eyes… that’s the key & you are doing that with your observations here of your every day, expanding perception, creating more space and thus more time and re time… remember how a boring 40 minute class with a bad teacher in high school could drag out to what felt like eternity or when you are in a waiting room every time you look at the clock it’s like the minute hand is stuck & yet it feels like hours have gone by, a thousand dreams have been spun with not even one minute going by… to use that space in between, finding those gaps where time slows way down helps make time or so it seems…

now and then and can retrieve from there. so…stuffs ok.
too bad about people not appreciating snakes. they
really are magnificent creatures and very very accomodating
yard neighbors…keeping to themselves. rarely seen.
i grew up in close relationships with snakes. a long
story but i really love them a lot.

yes. i’ll move the snake when Marti comes.
    this article is just great.
THANK YOU for passing it along…
and the thing too is that it’s compounded by the medium
    being
    CLOTH
considered a hobby, considered women’s medium. something
    one does in the evening.
and the real reality is that probably hardly anyone is
going to Understand and honor of their own accord.
so, it’s left to us (me) to learn ways to arrange things
in my own mind and honor my Self.

    i can’t find the snake..
    maybe i’m nuts..
i think if you just add some yellow or ochre to the paint you can get ivory. i do it all the time when i don’t get the color i want.
well not all the time but when i paint..
it will look different when it is all done. now you see it next to the wood which makes it appear whiter.

so many different shades of white. so little time.
in my next go-round, if i get to choose (and i guess we do in some way) i’m going to be a “namer of paint colors.” something i could do and while stitching.

LINdaaaa…you really don’t see the snake? or am i
    just missing humor?????
well..the thought of asking that man at walmart to
add ochre is more than i can bear. and it WAS ochre
tho that he dribbled in to get what we got….
this morning, in first light, it Was ivoryish. it’s
the stark light of day here…but then, it does that to
    all color…so….
and yes. next to the wood. and also, it’s just so
DIFFERENT. will take getting used to

i also have one chip … it’s the more expensive
Better Homes and Gardens paint they carry…
    but it’s called
    Willowy White….
    now THAT’S a combination, yes????
and was it on your blog that the whole paint buying
conversation went on??? have been trying to remember…
    i think it was?…
    anyway, this Willowy white…
the walls in the kitchen are blue ish and i am looking at
    this Willowy. maybe?????
am carrying around the chip in my pocket and holding it
up here and there against other colors to see what it
    really looks like…
    it’s SOOOOOO pale
but it might be good. might make the contrast of the
    white easier on me?

What is the story of the snake painting by Craighead?

    Like

  23. grace Forrest Avatar

Laura…i don’t know her story. it was one of the prints that i ordered for that bookstore i used to be co owner of. it was a popular print. when i left Michigan, it was one of the things i brought with me of that former life. i liked it because my childhood had a lot to do with snakes. i loved snakes. and i guess to me, the child is communicating with the snake. the snake is offering a gift. there is negotiation over Iris at a river. i spent my childhood on the banks of a creek. almost everywhere i’ve lived since i left my childhood home has had iris. iris to me are magical. the tubers can lie on the surface of the earth seasons and wither, appear to be nothing at all. yet, with a small amount of water, revive and florish. i used to study Jungian Psychology. snakes are thought by many to represent the interface, mediation between conscious and unconscious. the child depicted is not young, but a changing age. maybe becoming Aware?
i don’t honestly know what Meinrad had in mind.
