and just after this, Wind rose up and

RAIN.

and lightning and Thunder man and i checked, and all the Goats in the Way Back were crowding at the gate, thinking NOW was the time to go Home.  So i went out and called  "come come" and they galloped to me and i went under and into their new little shelter, which is NOT the Albatros that they are familiar with, but it was covered and the rain was outside this and we crowded in there.  All of Us.  and i said stuff and they pushed and shoved and re arranged themselves over and over and Arctica who WON't, let me touch her, DID, as did Just Going, who also ordinarily won't.

and there was great Lightning.  great Thunder and just Some Rain.  some small rain….so far.  it is ongoing and somehow in all that i got more blood….

IMG_6353

so many scabs.  scab red.

and in the middle of all of it i looked at this altar cloth…wondering about it …..and
IMG_6350f

and look.  look at the center.  empty white.  except for the Stuff that flows from it.

and i found, i think, a home for Buckwheat.  i had contacted Deanna Baca who i know from the Daughter Days and told her i needed to do something.  and first of the Somethings would be Buckwheat, who takes up a whole space there.  because of his buckness and because of his

Horns.

and she said sorry.  NO one wants a Goat like this….no matter his credentials.   but then, later today an email.  a woman Mary in Las Cruces and her daughter Cara who have bought 2 breeding does from Deanna are interested in Buckwheat.    and as it went, email from  Las Cruces…from  Deadbroke Ranch.  They will pick up Buckwheat on July 8th when they come for Deanna's doe Marina.  Buckwheat will become a Herd Sire.  and from the little i know, he may be offered for Service.  not many or any Nigerians there.  so a whole new Life for him.  and it frees up space here. I don't really know what to think,  but i do know that life is predicated on so much.   and i guess that's enough for tonight.  there is more lightning on the Rim.

i am so so SO glad for him. it is how it should be. and
i have the Urge to go out there and take a pic of them, now settled, i am sure they are, settled in the new shelter…
it was like a thing we used to do in grade school when i was a kid. the Air Raid siren. practice run. and now they
know. they know they can be safe from the Dreaded Rain to them, but the oh oh so NEEDED rain for the Whole. How it is. How just so complex and Amazing. and how beautiful, the color of Scab Red.

The shelter held, Buckwheat will begin a new adventure and here, last night, some 82 miles away, as we sat down to have dinner, the evenings entertainment was provided by the ever present wind which surprised the relatives who live in Albuquerque but don’t get the wind that dances here in Rio Rancho. Rain came too, strong for about 20 minutes and I wisely refrained from going outside to dance my thanks. I remained seated because a few weeks after we got here, it rained, my first rain in New Mexico and I was thrilled and ran outside and did a dance to thank the rain gods. Well just before I got done dancing, the rain stopped and didn’t return until last night so I wasn’t going to tempt fate…cause we need this rain. My nephew Mark spoke of the monsoon season which happens in July but said for the past few years, the rain totals have been dismal but there is always hope that this year it will be different.

Have been thinking about the goats and their horns…I looked after 7 milking goats back in the 80’s, they all had horns & never hurt each other or me + their horns were very handy in those moments when the goat got all single minded and willful (as they do) a quick shake of the head by the horn would easily change his/her perspective about things!

well…so much factors in. if All of them have horns, then
that’s an even playing field. and if their Space is large, then that factors in.
here, Tenzen and Gideon have no horns. Sunny Ray has those
skinny scurs that would break easily with the daily
    jousting.
then, there’s the thing of small children. horns are
eye level. and fencing. and lots more.
and this herd of my daughters….the intention was
a quality dairy herd. to have a dairy herd, you need to
breed to milk and this gives babies. these babies need to
be sold. if a buyer wants to use them for their kids
4 H programs, they are required to be dehorned. Same is
true for showing them in any formal way…or at the State
Fair. and you need to do that if you are going to be
available to the “public” as someone “out there” who has
goats. that’s been my problem here. so far.
the president of the Southwest Nigerian Dairy Goat group
is Lora Kniffin. she lives up the the East Mountains.
has tons of goats she breeds. Prairie Wood Ranch. i
looked yesterday and really and very honestly, all of the
kids that have been born here are of equal quality to her
goats with the exception is that she breeds for blue eyes.
her kids sell for somewhere around $300. no more nice
than the 6 i have right now. some less nice. but since
Jenny has dropped out of the picture, they are not registered under her Herd Name with the National organization.
WHY am i writing all this???? oh…..Bla Bla Bla.
    anyway
i feel good with the dehorning for two main reasons. the
acre of space they live in and the fact that the majority
of them Came with no horns. and i need to sell or give
away the babies if i continue to breed once a year to
continue the milking. they have a much better chance at this if they are dehorned.
    so…i don’t know, Mo.
i am not personally afraid of Buckwheat, but i watched
him inadvertantly slam into the rear end of Gideon. that’s why he got moved. Gideon is old. Tenzen is very
gentle and non confrontational. Sunny Ray is just now
a year old and beginning to “juice up”.
how many bucks were with your herd? that’s a thing about
this situation here too. 4 bucks. many people don’t even keep one…..take their does for driveway breedings.
each situation is different. i am just trying to understand the one i am living in here.

ah I see, the goats ran with the horses and they were all nanny goats, we walked them down the road to a friend’s farm who had a fine billy goat with a little herd of his own who was very beautiful but had quite a powerful aroma about him. I can’t imagine what 4 bucks would smell like when the does come on heat… ummm… wild?!!

What an experience that must have been with your goats. It will be interesting to see if the formerly aloof girls will let you touch them on regular days. They must have felt comforted by your presence under the shelter. How long did you stay with them?

I had a funny moment when I read “… and all the GHOSTS in the Way Back were crowding at the gate, thinking NOW was the time to go Home.” I thought, where is a GHOST”S home, quickly, before, of course, I figured out that you wrote, GOATS! Man… fungus in the sinuses is possibly a little close to the brain.

no. and that’s a good word to use, aloof. some are just
that way. it often changes when they give birth. they
are consumed by the birthing and you are not you to them
but a uhhhh, movement, with your tending/touching. and
sometimes it changes from then on.
but some remain aloof. the only real issue with it is
for hoof trimming. not sure how i am going to go about
that. But/And also, sometimes if they go to another
place, need to make their way in a new environment, they
will easily bond with the human in that new environment.
    ????, Goats….
i stayed probably about a 1/2 hour. it was really nice.
i love the smell, fragrance, of the straw and them and then the scent of the lightning, rain. i would have
stayed longer, but they just didn’t stop milling. had they been able to lie down, i would have stayed.
