this is James Fortune.  He is my granddaughter's great grandfather.  She has his surname,  Fortune, along with her married name Ortiz.   The tendrils travel far and wide.  Today James Fortune died.  Granddaughter had traveled a month or so ago from California to Michigan to see him.  She says she is his Favorite.  Maybe,  but maybe such a man made all  of them feel they were the Favorite.  Here in New Mexico,  it's called consentida.  The special one.  She grieves.  i don't know any of that part of the family except for her father when he was 19 years old.  The one who impregnated my daughter, Gary.    Gary who died at age 19.   But she does.  they are Family.  and i find self thinking about this tonight.  Family.   How we choose to keep family or not.  She chooses Yes.  And she travels across the country to keep the blood flowing.  She grieves tonight.    I think, tonight.  Her son, Julian,  almost 5 years is with his father in New Jersey.   and with a HUGe  Puerto Rican family there with tons of Aunties.  I don't know any of them either.  Only his father Mike.   so, I think about this too.

a tribe of Harvester Ants has set up housekeeping in this crack in the middle of the walkway.  All day they are BIZZY,  like Bizzy,  bring things.  I read about their underground world they build and think of it,  under the main walkway here.   It's hard to be Care Full not to step on any of them.

I think it’s good too. Have been following from afar. Ah the web of family, the exuberance and learning of dog, the good dog Tay. The interwoven ness of things and the exasperations and beauty of it all.

Three legged Tay, four legged Tay. We recognized Tay from the beginning with her three legs; now with her four legs, she is more complete. Family is like that: sometimes all we have is our small nuclear family. Sometimes we are fortunate to have a huge extended family, and sometimes, we make our family not by blood but by who we come to know, love and connect with. We recognize our “tribe” no matter the size, we recognize our connection; our “completeness” comes from our circle of love.

it’s really interesting…and i love to think about it.
I left Michigan before i had an opportunity to really
come to know that part of the family. and i didn’t go
back. Daughter and her kids did and i “know” them through
the telling of stories. Alyssia has kept the connections
strong. As she now does with her son and his father’s
family in New Jersey. I love thinking how Julian has
    so many who love him.

actions. yes. and then valuing those actions. The willingness
and or desire to keep family and create family. or not.
    Yes.
and yes…it is a pepper plant. i am waiting to see if it ever
creates even one pepper. it’s a failure to thrive being, but
also just hangs in there. am hoping against all hope that it’s
a bell pepper and that somehow suddenly it will take hold

and the name Fortune. yes. when Jenny had her i wanted her to
keep her own last name for her. But no.
so it was Alyssia Danielle Fortune. Always sounded like a
writer of romance novels to me.

what a most beautiful song of the heart your granddaughter sings as she listens to the music within her and flows to places to bring what matters to her, close…family…people…their stories, their love, their lives. Her son, too, gathers in the love and knowing that she has given to him in this story of family, and how she keeps the threads connected across the country. What a blessing it is for her to listen to the calling of her inner nature to find, to be with, all those to whom she finds the call of family…and she blesses you with her love and stories…much heart delight in your post today…and seeing that smile on her grandfather’s face . . yes, it is surely for you as well.

I knew this was Tay right off, from the tilt of his head.
Family is funny that way. I kept contact with his aunts…saying it was for the kids to know that side of their family. But, long after the kids grew up and moved on…it was still me and the aunts, because it meant something to me as it turned out. One passed last year, so there is just the one aunt now. You can see his good heart in his smile. Blessings to all in your wide=spread, varied world.

Yes, a kind looking man and a lovely grandfather. Lots of medals too, he knew a lot of things having been in a few wars. I feel sad knowing he’s gone.
Those are Tay’s long legs and curious pose for sure. She’s all there.

Alyssia LOVES family and just does it all with such ease
and purity. I love watching her.
and Widespread and Varied…yes. I love the fact that
her son Julian has all this blood flowing in him and she
mixes that blood with story. He is all of us, from all over the place, from all kinds of lives….we flow, in him.
She tells him. He will know and carry Us All.

    He was a soldier in WW2, in the 40’s. I can’t imagine,
for a young black man. His story would be wide and deep.
One of the younger ones on Facebook pointed this out…
his life as a soldier in the 40’s when young black men couldn’t enter so many places …
But the young ones of that family grew up in the day of
Say it Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud
and here were are, 2014, when we all are not exactly
sure what to say? Interesting. But he loved them. He loved them all. and that’s what is important….?
