after a week of Travis and Eddie taking on the Care of the old cowboy,  of me just going every other day for a while,  doing laundry,  talking to ocb,  but as an "extra",  i slow slide into the week end when the Colorado people visit him and i need to meet with them Sunday morning.

The August Dreaming is finished.  There is a sense of Exhale with this and also then,  a sense of a gap of sorts.  Maybe not a gap.  that is too defined.  More, a sense of a space. With soft edges.   Have no new cloth waiting.

and then,  there are these.

the first touch of them to cloth, sitting on the bench infront of Old C's home….????????

this afternoon,  just on printer paper

brushed over with water.  They are very soft colors,  very organic feeling.  I like them.  Maybe tomorrow,  this Mantis on cloth????

i don’t know. they are not really intended for cloth, i don’t think….
Lynda Merry of iWonder first brought them to my attention a long time ago.
She feels they are color FAST. But on a cloth that would be washed????
don’t know. i will try things out with them…find out.
With what i’m doing, it wouldn’t be an issue to me, but i can see in your
    work it would be critical.
when i was sitting there at OCB’s, i used each on a piece of tea dye muslin,
like that face is on, just to see what they looked like…
I’ll hang that test strip outside tomorrow in the 90’s SUN and watch for fade or other changes. Actually, SUN might “set” them even more….bleed them into the fibers of the cloth????
I liked them for the Mantis. can feel them being layered…blended in and then layered until the sense of Mantis is really there.
What i want to do with them and cloth i really don’t know at all. But they give me a sense of uhhhh, hmmm, integration of drawing and cloth. and
also a sense of the drawing being the “thought” and the cloth, the diorama the thought lives in????? something like that or really it could be vice versa…
    ????????????????????????????????? a LOT to find out….

I do so love your drawings, grace. and your explanation of drawing and cloth. wonder if they can be heat-set with an iron. . .a clean cloth over the marks perhaps.

good thought! iron heat set. Maybe. I think SUN does the same???
    but????
i will work with these pencils. They are very interesting and very
different from regular colored pencils which i am familiar with.
they are soft…I want to read more about them.
it would be really GRAND to find a way to marry the cloth making with the drawing, so they receive eachother fully

The pencil colored face, cold and hot reminds me of a Celtic drawing of the wind…what good pencils to have and a very fine way to experiment with cloth. The mantis is beautifully drawn and I especially like the one with water applied to the pencil, deepens the softness of the colors but because they blur the lines a little, gives movement to the mantis. And tonight as I was coming in from sitting out for a bit in the backyard, the most exquisite and largest walking stick on our glass sliding door screen…what mystery to this creature. I will send you a photo because it is breathtaking.

Yes. Heat set. Here from Dharma:

I did a small experiment with these on muslin a while back and it survived the washing machine. You can also touch a wet brush to the pencil tip and apply it by brush that way. Cloth will probably wick the color a little faster than paper will. Takes a bit of experimenting.

I used to soak intense colored things in vinegar and it seemed to fade only a bit, then soaked in salt which sets dyes sometimes. I envy your set and the experiments to come. Mantis if very fine!

once i was sitting in my backyard..years ago..it was so still.and quiet and then there was a seemingly loud crunching snap…seriously loud enough to make me get up and walk to the edge of the garden where a huge mantis sat..a now headless bee held in her front legs as she ate him at her leisure..such intensity..the strange silence the incredible green of a hot and humid summer..the balance of the mantis as she sat and ate so slowly…
enjoy the spaces gentle day grace much love cynthia

these moments that are indelibly in our minds…reading this i
thought…what is like this in my mind? and i instantly
remembered driving on a winding road in Oregon, the Beauty of it beyond anything and coming round the bend, a herd of horses, running full out and then STOPPING!…SUDDEN!! and the shrill scream of
two rising up against each other, over and over and over in only one second and blood flowing from teeth and hooves
to witness these things…such a gift…thank you for bringing this
    back to me
and oh so gentle day to you,
