this is the way i love it most.  Unstitched…loose

but it's a Cloth.   Things get stitched down.

I listened to Zoe Keating .  You can go to Utube   Zoe Keating Davos 2016 Closing Performance.  I want to make cloths that are like Zoe Keating's music.   I listened to it over and over and stood in front of this that was pinned to the Wall,  holding my hand up there,  feeling what it might be like to have that Butterfly of Sun hovering just over my hand

and i understood a little, maybe, about saying outloud that i am tired of cloth.   What i mean is

i feel like i can't find a way to make the things i see in my mind,  translate to cloth.  I just don't know how.   And maybe i never will.   So i apologize to cloth….for saying that.   I apologized to my baskets of cloth scraps,  to my threads.   I didn't mean it.   I love you, cloth.

Grace not loving cloth is about as likely as the sun forgot to come up one morning. (Smile.)

Cloth has it’s limitations the same way that people do. I know.
It’s incongruous even arrogant of us that we have come to use cloth the way we do; to express beauty, to emulate nature, to capture feelings, when all it was ever intended for was function. Utility. To cover, to warm, to carry, to hold. Really, these thing are so much.
No surprise to find recalcitrance, resistance, outright rebellion sometimes, from both cloth and people.

As a photograph is a shadow of the thing it depicts, so too the works of my hands can be shadows of the images in my mind. Sometimes that’s just the nature of cloth, the limitations of its ability to represent dimensional shapes and natural color. Whatever the reason, it can be frustrating. For me there is also an unending temptation to rip out and try again, despite any evidence that it will make a substantive difference.
But then again, sometimes magic happens: the image in the mind is overtaken and the cloth becomes itself. I live for those transcendent moments … either in my own hands or more often watching over your shoulder here at Windthread.

At this point I accept all these moments as true. But it takes a lot of moments to build the truth of a lifetime. Love means, to be corny, not to be sorry. Maybe to be glad for the opportunity to say and have that be ok.

does the cloth or the idea need to be stitched down so firmly?

i like jude’s safety pins. . .in case things really need to move somewhere else. . .but this hand grace. . .even stitched, it could also look like it could lift itself off if it wanted to. held just enough. . .
as to deb’s comment. . .i think we are somewhere in between in the history of cloth. . .evolving together with it. . .think of the opulence of costume/dress in other centuries, through recent times. . .what we do with our meaning making is more selfless. . .connecting to something else. . .not the vanity of covering self

The first time i was here, I read your words: “I didn’t mean it. I love you, cloth.” ~ And truly all I could think of is cloth is forgiving. But I didn’t write that because after I typed it it felt silly or trite. But here I am again and thinking the same thing. So I guess I’ll tell you that. I like that we can proclaim something and then undo it or change our minds or clarify or whatever and then just continue on. I like that about life. That forgiving part.
