i googled a question of how many reservations there are in New Mexico and there was no site that gave me that information.  I'll need to find my map of NM and count them myself.

and i guess that when i said,  live like an Indian,  what i'd had in mind were reservation indians and those on their fringes.   There are of course,  persons of Native heritage that live all over the place and among all of the rest of us.   But i guess i am thinking about Rez indians.  The indians that went where white people told them to go and stayed there.  Reservations.  Spend a little time thinking about what that word means.  Reservation.  How those "in charge",  identified land as such and told people to go there and stay put.  Laws were enacted.  Treaties signed.  Treaty.  think about that word,  too.  And think about how these things aren't just "stories".  But the history upon which Today breathes.  Here,  where i live,  is Alamo,  Navajo Nation.  Just on past Magdalena.    These are people i shop for groceries with,  spend time at the laundromat with.  But that's pretty much the extent of it.

one of the first things about indians,  about, i think,  all indigenous peoples,  is the common understanding of taking only what you need.   Take only what you NEED.  Give Thanks.

Wiki has a list of Indian Reservations and Pueblos in New Mexico. The list shows 5 Indian Reservation, the Navajo Nation and the rest are Pueblos. The Reservations are Acoma Indian Reservation, Mescalero Apache Reservation, Santa Clara Indian Reservation, Ute Mountain Reservation,Zuni Indian Reservation.

Take only what you need and give thanks is not just an indigenous belief; my father used to tell me that all of the sheepherders, like himself, who came to this country from Spain, believed in that most strongly from their own way of life in Spain.

Give thanks for sure must be first and last whatever you have or are given….(maybe even for all I no longer want or need but find it so hard to get rid of three flights up and with new laws about when and where one can dump stuff an my old lady strength just not enough)

In addition to what you’ve mentioned, the other thing I respect about the Native Americans I’ve met is that they say what they mean and are totally sincere. No “bull.” They are also very gracious and generous with sharing knowledge.

Yes, wouldn’t it be refreshing if we could have a little more of that candor in all of American life. The willingness not to hate so easily, and the willingness to work together.
