every evening,  after giving Water to the Wall Garden at A,  i walk up this road/drive toward this setting Sun.  Right now it is RED.  This pic does not represent it well.   it's Red.  But well enough to give a glimpse of what Fire might look like,  in a close distance.

Jaime commented yesterday  "If i am going to worry effectively,  I need details.  How do you stay alerted?  How do you evacuate with the goats?  Where do you go?"

First,  i am educating myself about Fire ongoing.  There is a lot to learn.  the science of Fire even has a name,  which i forget at the moment,  but in a category of Earth Sciences.  And to say that i work at it, but know not much at all yet.  Understand not much of it's dynamics here…..in this land of such LUSH ness that really,  in these summer months is so much more of what i know to be desert.  Where i came from…so much more Sky Water…the monsoon rains of July,  then the occasional electrical storms throughout August and September.  THIS,  here,  in this land of Forest,  this is

dry.

NO precipitation.  None.  and this is normal.  What is not normal is the increase in overall temperatures.  The changes to seasonal norms ie beginning and endings.  It IS changing.  When ground igniters begin early and dry sooner,  when the temperatures exceed 100 degrees for days,  it ripens the opportunity for Fire.  Any small spark.  small.   spark.  I forget the percentage,  but the vast majority of California fires are the result of human cause.  Little things.  a spark from a lawn mower even.  The fire now that rages in Redding…from some defect in an automobile.   Who would guess.

so i learn.  Daughter Jenny reads copious info and shares it.  I read all that i find.  I watch CalFire site.  What i am grateful for tho is that i don't have TV.   Jenny said today that people actually get sick from TV.   Usual programing is replaced with 24/7 coverage of  major fires like this one now to the north.  She works at the hospital in Chico and people come in sick from worry.

so to Jaime's wonderings:

how do i stay alert?  Easy,  here.  The Hill is just off a major road of Olive Highway.  Just down the way ,  like maybe a quarter of a mile at most,  is that market/gas station.  Lakeside Market.  Which becomes the command center for CalFire for anything in this area.  They also are invested in keeping it.  Gas pumps,  underground propane resource tanks.    Not to say it couldn't happen.  Knock on Wood.  Anything can.  But they are very invested in keeping it alive.

There have been two small fires close already.  One at the lake   not far and one just over the way…we could see the smoke rising from the driveway….smell that one,  ash fell here and the Goats were anxious.  What i have come to know is that if anything is at all nearby,  the sound of emergency vehicles going up Olive Highway is constant.  It begins with police sirens,  changes to police sirens and intermittent Fire Vehicles that emit a loud long sound,  and it increases,  until it's almost constant.  It might sound horrible,  but really,  it's not.  It's reaassuring.  They are ON IT.  I have an incredibly HUGE admiration for CalFire,  for local FireFighters.

How do we evacuate with the Goats?   this is what that movable shed is for…so we can clear the Goat Boat,  make it ready.  We need, to,  to get the horse trailer emptied.  right now, half of it is filled with solar panels.  It needs to be where it can GO.  Maybe down in the Rooster Swamp in the summer months?

We,  I,  continue to use the stainless steel milk bucket with pellets in it to rattle and that draws them quickly.   Do that,  and load them. Leave.  There is of course too,  Tazmeena,  Puppy and Tay.  This is why when there is a "maybe" evacuation warning,  we get Ready.

Where do we go?  I don't know.  Depends on where the fire IS.  There are endless sites that give info,  many places where people and livestock can hunker down.  Everyone around offers refuge.  So you wait to be told.  You get OUT and wait to be told.   The roads are full of people helping….giving information.  People come together.

So…all that.  and do i wish i hadn't come here?  No.  Somehow it feels right.  Somehow i am up to the Risk.  Not sure how,  but i am.  I don't worry.  I listen.  I watch.  but i don't worry.  I love this Hill more and more every day.   So much Magic here,  Earth Magic.  It might burn.  No way to know.  as i've said,  it's Luck.

Thank you for all that information. I am glad you don’t watch tv also. The hype is real but not helpful. Yes, I was a nurse in my previous life and people do get sick from worry. But do you have instant alerts on your phones like we do for tornadoes and blizzards and hurricanes? I’ve found a couple of websites that give updates on the fires but I couldn’t imagine trying to find them on my phone in an emergency. It’s reassuring to know there are people that open their lives and look out for others. Fire people of course are great. Please share what you and Jenny learn about fire. Information is the antidote to useless worry. If you want, I can try to help teach you how to send info in links. You do live in heaven there. May your luck remain strong.

Holy shit, Grace!! When you gave more specific details about your general location I realize I know EXACTLY where you are. Not that such a thing matters one bit but now I can visualize accurately beyond the pics you share.
You have highlighted a crucial point about the firefighters’ ongoing awareness and ability. Although these patterns are doubtless more severe and ongoing due to allegedly non-existent climate change, the general issue is not at all a new thing for the people or the place. Hence the pros and entrenched local population know precisely what to do and how to do it. It’s no different, really, from the folks around here knowing what to do if a nor-easter dumps mounds of snow on top of a couple feet of existing precipitation slowly fusing with thick layer of ice.
The key – as with anywhere else and whatever that area’s most likely risks are concerned – is to self-educate and remain vigilant. You are already doing that. To be honest, when it became clear you were Really Going, I was ‘way more concerned about unpleasant ways you might learn about bad stuff connected to rattlesnakes and contaminated water. You already had your rattlesnake lesson and appear to have taken it very much to heart. As you are now learning not just about wildfire specifically, but what “bone dry” really means on all kinds of levels.
You are vastly attuned to Our Mother. She holds All. And you hold her as you Go.

I’ve watched you deal with so much on your own over the years. It must be a relief to be part of a human group at this point for help and decision making. Once again I learn from you–how to be in the world and just go.

Having a plan. So many in this situation have no plan. A packed bag. Medicines. Pets. Full tank of gas in vehicles. Charged phones. Meeting place for family members. Here in Maine it’s deep snow pack and fire all Winter. Houses seem to burn to the ground in such a short time and water to fight the fire–freezes in fire hoses.

I don’t..have alerts…just the sky and listening. But both Jenny and Alyssia do and they are constantly aware. It would take all of us to do what would be necessary.
and i will share what i learn, because it’s not just about Fire, but about the Life of this part of the planet…fire
being just one of the Elements.

it could not be done by one. I would not have taken it on, as one. Here with 16 Goats…2 cats, a dog and a chicken.
I have returned the Goats to Jenny. We share now.

Thank you for the information on your plan “if” you needed one. My sister is in Weaverville, no power, packed to go should the winds shift. I have lived long enough to experience many fires in California, and as you said, what is different these days is the temperature. So very dry and hot. I have made peace with living in a fire zone, “Yosemite area”, now the only precious items are 2 dogs and 2 cats and me. The rest belongs to the Universe to do with as She sees fit. Blessings dear one, stay safe.

Thank You so much for coming here and giving your words. Thank You.

I learned how to ride a horse there. Like really ride a horse hardcore western style with all my pre-selected friends plus another guy who, like me, had been sent there for the summer so I could live a wholesome godly life kept safe from inevitable things that all teenagers find one way or another.
He was a surfer dude from Santa Cruz. I was too afraid and prim to include myself the time one of them “appropriated” his older brother’s pick up truck and everybody but me went AWOL to Santa Cruz so that Tony could have some time there. But we were also going on inland jaunts to nowhere. The cover story was that I was being prepared to get at least a placement ribbon in the Trail newbie category of a local competition. I got good (“for an easterner”) but nowhere near that good.
I knew your Place and also more diffused and generalized area throughout the summer of 72. We could ride and ride for miles. Supposed to be going in another direction and staying along the way if necessary with Church Folk but we – a band of 7 teenagers – did no such thing. We were gone one time for 4 days and in that time our lying was discovered. So, abruptly, I stopped knowing your place and those others I had learned.
It is astonishing all that i’m able to remember and more fully understood why I was so magnetized at times since you’ve arrived and wrote of the goats “just flowing” out of their conveyance. Through all you share I have felt SO emotional. My wildest and most rebellious adventures of the time(s). As a younger boomer that summer was the first chance I had to follow my bliss. But would not have thought of living for the future or anything connected with matters of Legacy. Never thought this world would last long enough to think about the future until I was a mom and felt myself living something (and somewhere) else.
    what are the odds, Grace?????!!!!!
