turkey tail.

there's much about it if googled.  and Utubes.  An ancient medicine Being.  I have only gone through reading some.  And no one site tells the whole story.   I piece it together.  These fan like forms are the fruit of the Plant Being,  the "plant" is the mycelial net.   lives in the bark of the fallen tree,  the interior of that tree and down into the Earth beneath,  the net extending under ground.

when asking for harvest,  great care is given to leave the bark with connection intact,  not disturb that.  Gently.  With great care.

in the pic,  the ones with white undersides are the true Turkey Tail.  To the right,  Sterem ostrea or false Turkey  Tail.   A polypore,  Turkey Tail holds its spores in tubes on  its underside ,  the hymenium.   displays tiny holes visible to the naked eye.

as i am moving through this forest,  tree to tree,  i find self slowing and slowing.  i squat and look Long and carefully before touching.  then touch as lightly as i can.  I find self asking.  May i know about you?  May i learn.  And it continues,  through the rest of the day.  A sense of touching lightly.  Everything.  The cell phone,  dishes in the sink.  Emrie.  Not something i choose to do,  but something that was Taught.  as in Buddhism…direct transmition.  It is simply There.

The colors and shapes are amazing. Just found a wonderful book at one of the many free little libraries called How to Practice his holiness the Dalai Lama. I am loving it so much that I have even made a special cover for it. Attached my Imagine Peace stitched by Liz A with Deb’s beautiful floss. I wish I could post a picture of it here but will email you a photo. I find myself reading each paragraph over and over wanting desperately not to miss any of what it is trying to say. That sense of touching lightly .. I get that.

The turkey tails are beautiful! I did not know the fruit/plant info but it has been one of the missing pieces in my brain about fungi. The mycelial net. I have seen the videos of plant roots growing. It would be incredible to see the mycelial net penetrating the bark and growing down into the earth.Thank you for giving me that image of wonder. Also glad to know polypores, and false turkey tails. You truly live in a wonder full place.

I could get lost in this photo, wanting to carefully touch and trace the swirls; have seen turkey tail almost everywhere we have lived, except for Maui, but didn’t know what it was named. And I can’t explain why except maybe your words of walking quietly, touching softly, but it brought back a similar memory for me of wonder and discovery and you will recognize it when I speak of Swamp Buddha.
Years ago we were visiting the heart of Cajun country, Lafayette, Louisiana. We were there for an Acadian art and music festival but before going, we wandered around the land a bit because I had never seen such marsh lands, swamp lands. I was a little apprehensive due to my fear of snakes so I walked very carefully, quietly but constantly looking down at my feet. Quietly moving water, bird song, many submerged mossy, gnarly tree stumps, fecund smell and as I continued to gaze, my eyes found two stumps, side by side, on the edge of the water and I was stilled by the images. One looked like a Buddha and the stump right next to him, looked like a howling wolf. I can be quite fanciful so I told myself that these images, were given to me as a gift, to think of stories that transcend what we know…the photo I took of this is called Swamp Buddha and has given me many moments of wonder that probably would not have come to me if I had not walked slowly, quietly, with open eyes and acceptance.
Like Tina I wish I could put the photo here but I have emailed it to you; you will know it from many years ago.
