Everything.  Everything right now revolves around,  hinges upon  sense.  The sense of smell.  The sense of taste.

because there is none.

it's day three.  NO sense of smell  NO sense of taste and the great gray blah bland  emptiness of that.  Why eat?

I realize fully how much a sensualist i am.  How like a cardboard being i am with Out.   It is interesting to look at this.  See it for what it is.   I'd known it,  but not so clearly as now,  i guess because i have time.  Time with no taste,  no smell.

On the window shelf altar behind where i sit here are two boxes of incense.    Dhoop Cones that Lace Lady sent quite long ago.  Satta Sai Baba  Nag Champa,  SattaSai Baba Sandalwood.   Emrie loves them.  They are called the "Smellers".  Every time she's here,  she at some point,  points to them,  her eyebrows going up?  Uh, she says…meaning,  yes?  and i say the smellers?  she nods and i say ok and she picks up the boxes,  puts them to her nose.  Inhales.  Puts them to my nose,  watches me inhale.  We smell together.   Smell.  the first,  most basic of the 5 senses.   the most primitive and critical.  I think of Dana's new baby.  How when we first hold them,  our faces bend into them,  taking in their scent.   Breathing them in.

for 3 days i've been hungry pretty much all the time.  I've eaten toast.  Two bowls of ramen noodles.    Twice a scrambled egg.  For all it's worth i could have been eating shredded cardboard.  No taste.  No smell.     At the grocery yesterday,  i got chicken wings because of faith and hope.  Carrots.  ginger root, cilantro and celery.  and then onions and garlic.  That much so far in the pot and  i don't know from here..i have cabbage, broccoli and collard leaves,  parsley,  from the wall garden…?????  Why not?  But i don't know because I CANNOT SMELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I CANNOT SMELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!  EEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE  and WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

so i think about it all,  how much i love food.  it's all simple food here,  cooked on the stove or raw,  but how important it is to me to Eat food that i crave.   Worth thinking about.

I have a Son who is a chef.  I love cooking with him.  and i love that he smiles,  when we cook together,  because he will say what does it need and i lean over and smell and take a guess.  How he nods.  Yes.  That is the way to know.  Lean over and smell.

When we moved to Washington and were staying in an extended stay hotel (had a kitchen)until we could find a rental house, I got one of the worst colds of my life. Couldn’t breathe, couldn’t smell, felt like I was drowning, kept running into a hot shower almost every hour on the hour. Finally in sheer desperation, I reached into the frig, took out a jar of hot salsa, poured about 1/2 cup into a cup and drank it all down…WOW, in no time, I could breathe and I could smell. Other times when I have come close to not being able to breathe/smell due to a cold I pour lots of Tabasco into a cup of chicken stock, loaded with garlic and that does the trick- maybe this can help you?

Your soup looks like a delicious healing stew. Add Marti’s spiciness for added kick. I hope you feel better soon.

It’s a great loss to be deprived of odors. How smart the child who knows and loves the way things smell. Your observations make it possible for us to see and hear (not smell) along side you.

Chicken soup soothes … even when the sense of smell is gone. But ugh, how miserable … wishing you well sooner rather than later

I make chicken soup twice a month in Winter for my husband–who has no sense of smell. I often wonder what he is actually saying when he tells me the food tastes good.

The sensual gratification of food…smell, taste, appearance….are all really important to me too. When I had to severely restrict my diet I felt like my life was just not interesting. Here’s hoping Tabasco will kick start your idling senses. I find straight tequila is helpful. (Not kidding and not other alcohol, just tequila.)

oh dear grace….i wonder if putting some hot sauce under your nose, like it’s vick’s, would help too??? dan has some ‘tiger balm’ that is strong smelling.
i am always the first to smell anything, dan has learned to trust that sense of mine, sense his doesn’t work as well….haha

Same here only it was that loss of taste and smell that preceded the actual cold by a few days. My coffee was the first disappointment of each day. Nothing tasted right. Now it all tastes and smells like dirt. The worst is over, I hope.
