on New Year's Eve,  as we ate,  there was a LOUD POP kind of sound.   and then more sounds.  I said it might have been someone's tire blowing,  them crashing into the road bank of Old Olive.  Alyssia said a tree.   So i walked the Doe Goat Forest to see and yes.   a tree.   I don't know why this is.   They snap at earth level.   This one snapped and fell,  crashing onto others nearby.  It rests at an angle.   I squatted there.  just seeing.   breathing.   Walked back and over to the B garden where here,  in the little bamboo,  a katydid chose to spend it's final moments.  If you click you can see clearly.   There is Arugula,  self seeded,  sharp and tangy.  I eat it there.  Leaf by leaf.   Many things thrive on Tazmeena's grave.  There's no sign of the rhubarb but i feel sure that in spring there will be shoots.   The daisys continue to bloom.

on the way back up i sat a while in the hammock.   Just being there.   This rock from Lake Superior,  Michigan.   The guitar strings wound together and a piece of copper,  hammered with a red bead.

a quiet.   gentle day.   Sun.   Warmth.  Easiness.

we took the grandkids to the Wildflower Center Fortopia, where there was a tree that had fallen many many years ago … its exposed roots trimmed by exposure over time into a gnarly abstract sculpture …
but what was best was the climbing surface created by the trunk … and from the trunk, new trees had sprung, now fully grown in their own right … the kids climbed to their hearts content, until the grownups insisted they move on to the next fort on the list …
humans are so inclined to “tidy up” … to cut downed trees into firewood or otherwise dispose of them … if only we would just let them be …
I wonder how many people “get” the wisdom displayed in the Wildflower Center’s simple tableau … a tree sacrificing its vertical integrity in order to become more … how we might learn from that

They are called nurse trees. I love that name and love seeing them. They are probably more common here in the NW where we have so many trees. Love that you have warmth and peace.
    Happy New Year

oh also around here this happens every few months especially after strong rains in the swamp we leave alone. Trees can’t root downwards for more than a few feet before its solid ledge. once they get to a certain height they aren’t stable and strong winds take them down.

the trees that fall here are of the oldest. Jenny says
when there is a dead branch somewhere up, it soaks in
the rain and the entire tree begins to die. Eventually, the tree body is so sodden with Rain it cannot continue standing and lets go. I will go look again. See if
    i am told more.
