today.   Pico de gallo.   There are tons of jalapenos.   and tiny Jamaican hot peppers.   Jenny's man pickles them.  She likes the cucumbers little.    Taking the soil out of this potato grow bag,  i looked closely today.   The first 2/3  was the mixture of Goat manure  and garden soil from Tractor Supply.   Having never grown vegetables in pots before,  let alone grow bags,  i was unsure what might go on Inside.   But it was incredibly  Beauty Fully broken down and transformed  into a fine rich blend.   with Fragrance.   Planted the second Egyptian Walking Onion clan.   looked at the funny little rock and wood "rooms" and saw that it's very much like a Cloth….an Earth collage.   the cilantro is self seeded from last time around.  Fragrance is Pungent.

it also gave this.   As i finished the little terraced space,   the thought came that it's time for this cloth to begin and also  that it needed substantial  "context".    So i returned and looked for that  "context" and it's  this.  I wouldn't have thought.  but there is no doubt.   Before they get here tomorrow maybe i can baste it in place.   Closed the window under the table.  the one over the kitchen sink.   46 degrees tonight.  The Dixie Fire is 94% perimeter contained with small pockets of vegetation and needle cast still burning within.  I knock on wood…literally…many times a day.

What a beautiful crop. We’ve dipped just under 40 this week a couple times…

Colder nights, tomorrow night will be 39 here in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Winds may crank up tomorrow causing last day of Balloon Fiesta to end without a single balloon getting up into the sky…and just to say that every day, from the vantage point of my home, I have seen balloons. from our bedroom window and when I step outside.
Fingers crossed re Dixie fire, one more month, I think for your fire season; may it be calm…
Your harvest photo is delicious; I am drooling over your potatoes, they are bigger than I thought.
Last night, was cleaning our the frig, had one carrot, half a zucchini, 4 radishes, half an onion, two of our homegrown Chile peppers and a handful of leftover garlicky boiled potatoes. Took my old box grater and grated all of the above, except for the chilies, those I diced, added some salt, cracked black pepper, smoked Spanish paprika, fresh thyme leaves, a beaten egg. stirred all together, formed into patties, dredged in a bit of whole wheat flour, fried in olive oil and topped with a dollop of plain Greek yogurt laced with grated garlic. Soooooooooo good, a fine way to use up leftover bits. Surprise note: expected a bit of heat from chilies but also got heat from spicy radishes. And speaking of radishes, I never discard the green tops, wash, chop and again with more garlic and red pepper flakes, saute them in olive oil. I’ve even folded them into scrambled eggs.

Marti – I listened to an NPR piece yesterday about the balloon Dawn Patrol in Albuquerque … thinking “Marti is surely looking out her window and seeing such wonderful things!”
P.S. We’re packing our winter jackets for this coming week … will wave to you and R as we fly over …

We’ll be waving back at you and Don Liz and dreaming of the day when we can give you both hugs and share a meal together. Have a safe flight and a wonderful time in Santa Fe. Good that you are bringing your warm jackets because some of your nights will be below 30 degrees so of course, hot Mexican chocolate, green Chile cheese burgers and chilies on all of your food, even if you can only eat the milder chilies, still, they will warm you up.
P.S. I know you have been to Santa Fe before but knowing your interest in history and the fact that you were a docent, have you visited our wonderful living history museum, El Rancho de Las Golondrinas? It is one of my most favorite places to take family and friends. They just celebrated their Harvest Festival last weekend. This festival is one of my most favorite events but we didn’t go this year due to Covid concerns and they cancelled the event last year. We’ve gone many times and it is always so splendid:

Wonderful harvest. I love peppers but they are hard for me to grow here in Maine. I got some cilantro this year, but never enough. Your potatoes look great, how wonderful that you found the soil in the bag transformed.

Your harvest looks yummy. A meal right there (maybe with onions and some kind of protein added).
My mom planted a tiny red pepper a couple of years before she died in 2014. They’re HOT! We dried them and I still have some because it was a very prolific plant and they’re HOT! We like hot, but a little goes a long way.
