Feeding the Worms

Ever since i found out that earth worms have taste buds all over the delicate pink strings of their bodies,   I pause dropping apple peels into the compost bin,  imagine the dark, writhing ecstacy,   the sweetness of apples permeating their pores.   I offer beets and parsley,  avacado,  and melon, the feathery tops of carrots.

I'd always thought theirs a menial life,  eyeless and hidden,  almost vulger –though now,  it seems,  they bear a pleasure so sublime,  so decadent,   i want to contribute however i can,  forgetting,  a moment,  my place on the menu.

7 degrees here. just found this…
During winter most worms stay in their burrows, prisoners below soil frozen hard as rock and topped by ice and snow. They are coiled into a slime-coated ball and go into a sleep-like state called estivation, which is similar to hibernation for bears. (The mucous, or slime, keeps the worms from drying out.)

compost is the most wondrous thing … you have added to my understanding of it, as I think of it steaming on the coldest winter days … it keeps the earthworms warm

oh boy do I love learning this about the worms!
I have a soft spot for worms, together with snails they are amongst my favourite earth dwellers

Years and years ago…Janie and I did a worm unit with our class. The best day- we crumpled, tore and scattered recycling around the floor in separate color piles and put patches of tape on the kids’ bodies. Pretending to be worms, they rolled and wiggled through the pile, gathering and moving, creating “compost”. Such joy they had.

I wonder if the ones who live in the planters and window boxes survive? We have a place at the back of the driveway that teems with earthworms. Every spring, I catch up a bucket and put some in each of the planters on the decks to give life to the tired soil.

A beautiful post Grace. Saskia’s comment reminds me of a book from long ago about a snail(s)…I enjoyed that learning too.
