where they brought me this morning,  all those cloths,   it was immediately clear.

the Heart is in the making.  the process,  the happening.  the feeling of the process and the happening,  as it happens.

Yes and yes…for me, it is all about the process, all about the color and marking I can receive from the gifts of the land and less about what I will do with the cloths…the stitched story does come but it is not my first intention.
From the moment of heading out to find what I can find from foraging, the questions rise and after 12 years, they still do: I wonder if this or that will give me color and what type of color; will this give me markings; how will I do my natural dyeing; will I just plunk my dye materials in a pot and heat; will I place them in a glass jar and let the sun perform the alchemy (lest you think I am a romantic here, a lot of my solar dying has to do with my frugality and not wanting to use my gas stove!); will I freeze some blossoms or use frozen fruits to get color even though with the fruits, the color usually is fugative and not lasting and that doesn’t matter cause to see color come into an old cloth, is such a huge joy. Will I place my cloth loosely in my dye container or will I bundle it with the materials that I have found; will I do my version of folding and stitching to create a pattern that will hold the color; will I wrap a cloth around a rusty pipe or a bit of bark or even a mossy rock; will I sit on the ground, pounding materials into the cloth (hapazome from India Flint0 and chanting along the way as I pound…see I’ve done all of this and it never, ever gets old.
The old phrase, joy in the journey, is so apt for how I approach my dye work with cloth. The process is so organic and so full of possibilities that after 12 years, I still feel like an apprentice and that is quite the gift!

The interaction of these cloths is so strong. The stitched dots feel very affirmative. And aligned with the past stitcher of the table runner. Lots of power.

The field of linen brings the bird to life. I’m amazed at the difference made by switching up backgrounds.

i love you tell me to think of the stitcher who created the patterns on the Household Cloth…
WHEN? How was that for her? What would she think, seeing this? What might i say to her….?
What might she say to me?
thank you SO much for this…a whole new dimension

Cloth stories prove to be much like word stories. We start with fragments, maybe, but not necessarily, with a plan, but then the story dictated itself, sometimes contrary to our ideas. Both unfold best if allowed to choose their own path.
