to say.   when i imagine the Thing of Imagination….as the word has been given,    it comes to me in terms of what might be needed

some day.

this is the first time that i am able to  "entertain"   thoughts of a Some Day….so far,  have been unwilling,  but as i Stand and Face what is appearing day unto day,   i feel  the need to  uhhhhh,   accept a What If.    and Imagination lets me go there.   There is a Brightness of the word,  an Energy,   and openendedness….newness.     a sense of   Possibility.   and even,  a sense of  creative ….power.   My eyebrows go up typing that.   creative power?….?…..yes.  creative power.

i have no vocabulary for any of this.  it's all clumsy,  awkward,  and probably very flawed,  but i need to just go with it.

What if there is a barter society?    that's a good place to begin.    but before that….there's a new FaceBook group from Chico,  where daughter Jenny lives.  it's called Leaf a Plant….there   are small tables set up around town…people leave seeds,  cuttings of plants,  potted seedlings,  vegetables from their overflow.  Take something/Leave something     I look at this.   Kind of a Library. I thought earlier about  Imagining a kind of library of people.  Exchanging what you "know how to".

Liz is making a dress.

i remember.  way back in the very very Beginning of me with Spirit Cloth.   How totally amazed and energized i was by Imagining i could make AnyThing….AnyThing from scraps of cloth…from what might have gone to the dump.   if i really NEEDED to,  i could make endless things that would Work,  but would also be BeautyFULL.

so,  it's this kind of stuff i am thinking  of when i think

Imagination

we might need to go all the way back…to the deep knowledge and wisdom of the indigenous people,  the first people,  the aboriginal people

maybe not.

but Imagination will take us where  it's needed and we Can.    Si,  se puede

Yes to barter society and we have it here in Rio Rancho in the form of seed lending libraries:
After a few years here in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, I was so happy to discover that our two libraries had created a seed lending library. Everyone who had a garden could contribute extra seeds and there were many, many categories of seeds. Master gardeners were on hand at the opening to answer questions and give information. The seed library had it’s own catalogue drawers with index cards listing the categories of seeds and each seed packet had full instructions. The whole system revolved around the honor system and the only requirement to use the library was that you would in turn, give some of your seeds. Each time that we went to “check out” seeds and give seeds, we had a special time for there was always someone there, doing the same and we had very good discussions on how to grow herbs and veggies.
Sadly, a few years ago, the libraries ended the seed library program BUT then to our joy, in Feb. 2021, the program came back, renewed and with a grant “from the American Library Association’s “Resilient Communities: Libraries Respond to Climate Change. This was a different program, a pilot program on behalf of the city’s Library and Information Services Department in order to fund the seed exchange and tool kits.”
At the first day of this event, while supplies lasted, a free starter kit of a watering can, seeds and a gardening tool were given out. Besides “checking out seeds” you can now check out tools and have them for three weeks as well as renew your use of the tools.
We have not participated this year since we moved in April 2021 and it has taken me a year to get the little strip of land that I use as a garden ready for planting but I do hope to be able to once again, contribute seeds next year. To my way of thinking, this is one of the best ways to create community connection…

Marti … thank you for this … our library has just started a seed library, so I have sent a copy of your comment to our librarian to consider both the ALA grant and the idea of lending tools

we the people could be doing so much more … I think about solar and wind power … how the capitalist way of thinking precludes making these forms of power readily available to impoverished individuals … how that could both mitigate climate change and reduce the burden of energy costs on those most in need … I guess I’m a socialist at heart (a trait common to many librarians)

My library in Maine has a seed library and a large amount of “useful tools” to borrow. Tortilla Press, Sock Mending Kit, Log Splitter, Camp Oven, Seed Starter Kit. Crock Pot etc etc etc………Shelves full of items. And they are raising Monarch Butterflies again this year.
Our Library asked for Volunteers for Fix and Repair Days. Lamps that need new cords or plugs etc. etc. And they have people from AARP to do taxes and work on cell phones and lap tops.
My favorite is Typewriter Weeks. All sorts and everyone sits and types on the old fashioned machines. Coloring Pages and Reading Book Bingo are also fun summer Activities.

Carried these thoughts with me as I went out for Trust time. Came back in, and learned that Manchin of West Virginia has seen the light…and also, just now, read this article in the Guardian today written by Rebecca Solnit and Terry Tempest Williams: Here are some words:
“…Now. Between the scientists and engineers, philosophers and poets, Indigenous leaders, climate activists and engaged youth, we know what to do and how to do it. We have a multiplicity of tools, we have a kaleidoscopic vision where each of us can offer up the gifts that are ours, and most importantly, we have the spiritual will to change the course of our destiny on fire.
The future needs us. We need each other. At a time when the majority of Americans want to see serious climate action, too many politicians have failed us and undermined those who are trying. We ourselves must respond for those who will be born next week and next decade and next century, who need a planet alive and flourishing in all its exquisite diversity of land and creatures and humans. We have no right to rob them or the young people staring at a chaotic future now of their birthright. We do not represent them, but we can represent ourselves, as people in solidarity with all life. In that spirit, we join those around the world who have already declared a climate emergency, and we invite everyone to join us.”

Here we have a monthly magazine called the Shepherd. I was just reading an article about happiness. The world happiness report shows us that “we”cultures are far better at promoting individual happiness than “me”culture like our own. In the pursuit of happiness nations like Finland Denmark Switzerland reject Americas solitary approach in favor of a more collective strategy and it works. Sharing is caring .. we can’t go it alone.

Thoughtful & beautiful ideas. Around the city there are small free-standing shelves-some are full of books, food, art… all free for the taking, sharing. Seeds and plants would be a wonderful addition.
The concert I went to recently was the “Brightside” tour from their new song title. All I remember is the chorus, “I’ll be your brightside, baby tonight..,” and thinking, how things might be if we all tried to be each other’s brightside with sharing all that we can- plants, knowledge, comfort…

Sharing and caring community.. it is strong in the nomad community. Groups are constantly organizing cleanup crews to haul unbelievable junk and garbage people will dump in the desert. If you can haul that old bed frame out there, why not haul it to the land refuse center, unless it is maybe a matter of money. But many nearby are free. Barter lifestyle works here too, I have skills if you have tools and then the receivers are cooking a feast to feed all. Gardening is a problem, but there are great farmers markets to buy from others who are able and that benefits both sides. I believe that in communities that have less money these concepts are thriving. How to bring on board the larger conglomerates to quickly seek answers.. it takes 30 years for people to wake up and see the monarchs are now on the endangered list!!
Trust our voices must become one and loud.

Time is nearly upon me where I will have forty more hours a week to do with As I Will. This morning, Mr. Age of Reason went to his third grade open house and pronounced it and the teacher GOOD. The new school is less than a mile away. The bus stop visible from the lawn chairs out front. I have been thinking about story telling to the not-so-littles. What kinds of stories? How would I engage them. Would I be in disguise? Would I come only on a rainy day when they couldn’t play outside? Rainy Day stories made up on the fly…

i have come to know this in my own experience. I loved
ALONE in New Mexico…held it close. But what i have
found and learned here, in the Not Alone, is of equal Joy and i feel so incredibly lucky to have experienced both. and to know that the Not Alone will keep us. we can find ways for alone within the Not Alone. this is key.

Love the Japanese newspaper idea, the seeds. Brilliant idea!!!! I also love the idea of a place in community to leave seeds, bits of plants to be rooted, namely succulents. I think I will start something at our tiny cabin. Our condo community is too “bougie” to be interested in this idea. Boy are they missing out.
