there were many Manzanita here at one Time.   Long before we came.   Something happened,  an insect,  a "virus",  something and many died. Many,  before we came.    They lean,  arch over in their death.

today  was the first of the Fire Alerts from the so great app   Watch Duty.   Before it,   i would hear a siren coming Up and if there was a second,  i would begin to listen like an animal….like an animal….that i am….ears pricked,  senses alert,  adrenalin. ..    For more,  changes in their tone,  their  pace and anxiety would rise.   Last year,  with this app it was possible to click on…see immediately the position of the fire,  it's size,  it's fuel,   and be updated every 10 minutes.  It made a huge difference.   Could be trusted.   Relied on.

and so,  today,  i was on phone with Alyssia…we both heard the sirens…her even through the phone….and then there was a plane.  There are sirens…Hill is just off a maor highway…often sirens for EMS service or vehicle mishaps.  She hung up to call Jenny at work.   our  "drill".    Two planes then,  circling above.  Close.  Watch Duty tells us it's position,  that it is a vegetation fire,  planes have been deployed,  helicopters are on standby.  There is a photograph of the plume of smoke rising.  Moments pass.   I walked up to the top most point here where i could see off far into that distance,  the two planes circling circling circling overhead,  Low, i can see the designs on their bellys…Cal Fire planes.   This is our second year with the Cal Fire contract,  Butte County.   We will NOT repeat Paradise.   So i stand there…watching the sky, the planes,  listening for the helicopters when i will go,  begin the "protocol".

the planes circle and  after a time don't come back,  the update tells that it was a cooking fire,  can be handled by equipment on ground.   I sit on a large Rock and look around…this Manzanita in it's final times…the beautyful mars violet bark pealing,  some of it still alive and leafed out.   Reprieve.  Fire Season has begun.

Once again, the diligence, awareness, that sixth sense engaged, your almost 6th year on the Hill: aided now by technology, tempered by past experience and protocols in place, practiced. The readiness stance that comes into play, the deep breathing, sometimes a momentary suspension of breath, the sighs of relief, as the sky is filled with the helpers.
The Manzanita and your words of their succumbing moved me deeply, bending as they face what comes. All of you bending, pivoting, entering this season of unforeseen framed by survival instincts. We who do not live with this, can only offer our love. Know that we are here, bearing silent witness and chanting the hope…that this fire season will be less…

I read this recalling the times of fire and flood in the Hill Country … the heightened sense of danger, the waiting and watching … we are more buffered now, safer I suppose, but in losing the sense of danger, we have also given up the sense of being a part of the land
may you be safe … may your creatures and your loved ones be safe …

My friends live south and east of you. Most of the trees you mentioned have been cut and removed from their property as the trees act as a natural fire starter…… The wood, if I recall, is very dense and is oily- which makes it burn fast and very HOT.

Keep safe. I just saw that parts of CA are headed to 120°.
We need water pipelines networked all across our country. The SW sure could use some of the excess water the NE has

I do so love beautiful Manzanita, which we have in the hills near the Nature Center. But, reading Joanne’s comment is concerning.
So grateful for Watch Duty, providing reliable relief to some of that hyper alert. So grateful for your family working together for a plan, protocol, procedure & practice. May make all of the difference and at the very least, adds to that relief of hyper awareness. I showed my son where important papers are, in their easy to take with you container…earthquake country (I feel much more removed from fire threat in the new place, even if it is still there to a point).
May this ‘season’ be filled with moments of love and beauty…and so much less threat than considered. xo

Like Nancy, I think and prepare for earthquakes. Something that all we can do is be prepare for the during and after because there is no going. I do think of fire though, not likely but not impossible either, realize that the garden that I love so much would be a problem. Glad that you have more resources to help you plan…
