My immigrant parents used to tell me that of all of the joys of becoming a citizen of America, their greatest was voting. They made it quite the occasion, always going to the polls together, Dad wearing one of his best shirts, my Mom always wearing a lovely dress, her earrings, her purse to match her shoes. They were proud to vote because they said it made them feel so much a part of this place they chose to call home.
I used to enjoy voting in person, that sense of community, the basic joy of wearing the I Voted sticker. These days, we absentee ballot vote and one thing that is so great about here in New Mexico, as I am sure it is in other states, is that we can track our ballot and find out when it reaches the county clerk’s office. Both of ours did so on Oct. 17th so I wrote on a little post it, I Voted, and stuck it right above my Harris for President pin on my Harris for President t-shirt. I have been wearing this t-shirt every day and will do so until Nov. 5th, taking it off every few days to wash it at night so it is ready for me in the morning.
This is the most important in my lifetime, as far as I am concerned. We all must do all we can because it is unbelievable to me, how close this election is; it simply makes no sense and when those doubts and fear come rolling in, as well as anger, and I will admit freely that they do, I try my best to suck it up, go outside, catch a breath, as I just did… and let me tell you, catching a breath at 4:15 am, when it just a little over 40 degrees outside sure clears the mind!

    love your shirt ritual
I look constantly for any threads of optimism but just
sense the Breathing everywhere, the incredulity that it’s how it is
I will go on The Day and mark my vote. Soon.

I have thought a couple days now how grateful I am to live in a state where I can cast my ballot…early or on the 5th in person
and not have a worry it will be lost in limbo
a lot can be said FOR and ABOUT California, but even here in Oroville, the belly of Sierra Nevada, I believe. I think about what that means to me.

Yes, I been thinking how I am planning to go Sat. pm, first day of early voting and expecting things to be as they have been…organized, calm, maybe even quiet…simple. I feel so lucky.
