squatting at the hose connections.    Just out there,  fluttering.   at first I wonder if it might even be a moth…one of the large ones,   like Cecropia…  because of the size,   the time of day ,   but then…flight pattern…no.  a bird.

a couple days]

but not close enough for me to
SEE.   until      then    Close.  maybe 3 and a half feet away.      The size of a humming bird maybe,   even smaller.   I see as well as I can,  as much as I can and then….searching….

a wren

I share space with a wren.

and,   EVEN,               the rim of the wing feathers….black/white/black/white

Grace~ Oh, ooh your Wren! We saw a million little birds yesterday at the bridge…maybe sparrows, maybe a kind of finch…but, so joy inspiring. I could have watched for hours.

wrens are such cheeky little birds … their bright eyes are so knowing and their bold territorial chirps belie their size … really wonderful creatures

In summer the wrens around my house disperse into the deeper woods and although we can hear them, they are harder to see. At this time of year their perky little tails start popping up in the garden and at dusk they gather to roost in the overhangs of the old house. The first time I shined a light up into ledge beneath the roof I was so surprised to see five tiny brown heads peering down upon me. I should have known by the mess they make, although I do not begrudge them. I’m glad they have a safe dry place to spend the winter nights.

I found out that wrens like to take advantage of the shelters we provide. Tuck up in the high corner of the porch, puffed up. Peaceful and safe.
