Something about feeding others at one’s table: One of the most important lessons my Mother taught me was the gift of giving food, presented with love and joy. There were times when we had many food courses, there were times when we had a pot of soup. There were times when the tble in the dining room was set elaborately, white lace tablecloth, cloth napkins, candles, flowers, good china dishes. There were times when the kitchen table was where we gathered, simple dishes, paper napkins, jam jars for glasses. What always was constant was the wonderful food, delicious, festive, made without recipes, made from seeing what was on hand, using herbs that my Dad grew, spices that my Mom ground, always with an eye to giving us what was nutritious and so tasty. Many foods that I grew up eating would be considered peasant food, humble dishes, so richly flavored that they were fit for a queen and my Mother was the queen of cooks. Her sister, my Aunt, was th queen of baking but no one seasoned or prepared food like my Mother. Her sense of taste and presentation were incredible and her love of a house filled with people to share her cooking with, was her greatest joy.
The photos that you have shared with us grace from your book gives me that same sense; the joy of sharing food at the table…
