It’s hard to look. I’ve been trying to keep up, but there are moments when it is just too much.

In a newsletter email Robert Reich said that the first sign that we are becoming a dictatorship is to ignore rulings of the Supreme Court. I leave it to you to decide if we are there…I have not always agreed with the rulings of the Supreme Court as in their revoking of Roe v Wade but they made the only morally correct ruling when they ruled that Kilmar Abrego Garcia must be returned to the US.
Cudos for the cojones of the President of Harvard. He said, “No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”
Here in New Mexico,on April 11th it was reported that some international students at UNM, NMSU and NM Tech have had their visas revoked…the ACLU has made statements regarding these actions but cojones seem to be lacking from the leaders of these institutions as I have found no responses from them.

I’ve come back because I dug a little deeper and found this:
“UNM did not release the number of students whose SEVIS records were terminated, though at least 10 student visas have been terminated at other universities in the state, according to the Albuquerque Journal SEVIS refers to The Student & Exchange Visitor Information System which is a federal tracking system for nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors in the United States. UNM is trying to limit any information that could identify students, according to UNM”s Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Cinnamon Blair.
The University has never seen SEVIS records terminated like this before, according to Linda Melville, the director of international student and scholar services at UNM’s Global Education Office. A visa revocation does not typically mean a student has to leave the country, she said, but with a SEVIS record termination, it is less clear.
“It doesn’t seem like it’s connected to anything I know about that’s regulatory,” Melville said. “The lack of due process is really freaking everybody out. It’s all very disturbing.”

Yes . It is hard to watch. I keep thinking of what was happening in the 70s. How very innocent we all were back then. Reminds me of Dylan’s song. My Back Pages.
We were so much older then. We’re younger than that now.
